“Then Joab went to the king’s room and said to him, “We saved your life today and the lives of your sons, your daughters, and your wives and concubines. Yet you act like this, making us feel ashamed of ourselves. You seem to love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that your commanders and troops mean nothing to you. It seems that if Absalom had lived and all of us had died, you would be pleased. Now go out there and congratulate your troops, for I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a single one of them will remain here tonight. Then you will be worse off than ever before.” (2 Samuel 19:5-7 NLT)

Hello family, here is a little backstory be for we continue. David was had fled from Jerusalem because his son Absalom had rallied Israel against him (that is a story in its self). David and his followers found a town to take shelter. David appointed generals over his men Joab was one of them. He sent them out to stop the rebelling Israelite army he asked them not to harm his son Absalom but in battle a situation arose that didn’t leave them any choice but to kill Absalom.

David’s men had stopped the rebellion but David was so caught up in the loss of his son, he could not appreciate the victory God had given him.  Absalom’s rebellion was one of the consequences David reaped when he slept with Bathsheba (read 2 Samuel 11). Even in reaping the consequences of his sin God made sure David sat on the throne until his final days.

We may lose some things that we hold dear. It may be from bad choices or it is something that needs to go in order for us to continue along the path God has us on. Don’t focus on what you have lost. You are still alive, God did not allow the results of your mistakes to take you out! You still have a purpose! Pick your head up and see the victory God has given you!

To get the full story read 2 Samuel chapters 11-19 Its a good read!

  1. Thanks for another good post.

I’ve always found this story interesting, as it was Joab himself who killed Absalom with a dart as Absalom hung helplessly in a tree. Joab probably knew that as long as Absalom was alive he would pose a threat to David, yet Joab didn’t try to explain this to David, but he spoke words that were needed at the moment.

I find Joab’s career in David’s service intriguing. In so many ways he had the skills and the smarts David needed, yet he was always self-serving and treacherous.
