“So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days. Finally, the time came for him to marry her. “I have fulfilled my agreement,” Jacob said to Laban. “Now give me my wife so I can sleep with her.” So Laban invited everyone in the neighborhood and prepared a wedding feast. But that night, when it was dark, Laban took Leah to Jacob, and he slept with her. (Laban had given Leah a servant, Zilpah, to be her maid.) But when Jacob woke up in the morning—it was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob raged at Laban. “I worked seven years for Rachel! Why have you tricked me?” “It’s not our custom here to marry off a younger daughter ahead of the firstborn,” Laban replied. “But wait until the bridal week is over; then we’ll give you Rachel, too—provided you promise to work another seven years for me.” (Genesis 29:20-27 NLT)
Jacob was known to be a trickster, his name means suplanter. By this point in time he already stole his brother’s birthright (check out genesis chapter 27). I’m sure he did a few other not so noble things that the bible did not mention, but here we have the one who was supposed to be the trickster getting tricked. Earlier in the chapter Laban agreed to give Rachel his younger daughter to Jacob to marry in exchange for seven years of work. Well, it didn’t quite work out like that. Laban gives Leah his older daughter instead of Rachel. When Jacob realizes that he has been tricked, he confronts Laban only then does Laban explain that they don’t give away the younger daughter before the older. So Jacob had to work another seven years for Rachel.
What can we pull from this? The saying is true “what comes around, goes around.” Be careful of your actions and how you treat people because we may find ourself being treated the same way we treated them. We will find ourself having a “how you feel” moment? It May feel good to deceive, but it does not feel so good to be deceived!
Much Love & God Bless
