“Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.” Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.” (Mark 7:6-12 NLT)
You are on your way to bible study at your church. You are always there early; it’s been five years since you’ve missed the last bible study. You are the poster child for attendance. But, on your way, you see a family on the road side that needs help. They try waiving you down, but you say to yourself “I can’t be late because Pastor calls on me to read first.” So you bypass the family and continue on to bible study. Something tells you to go back but you brush it off and keep driving.
Later on, you arrive at home. You hang your coat up and crash on the couch; you turn on the TV to catch up on the evening news. One of the major stories is about a family that was robbed at gun point. You sit up to listen. On the screen you see the family that you passed by on your way to bible study.
We should not be so caught up into the church activities and schedule that we don’t have an open heart and ear, to do something that God is telling us to do, that diverts us from the traditional flow of things. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and how He is moving in the environment around you. Don’t get caught up in tradition.
